The Adult Diversion program is a community-based sentencing option used to deal with a person alleged to have committed a Class I or Class II offence including Theft Under $5000, Mischief Under $5000 or Assault (pending the circumstances).
The Adult Diversion program is a partnership between the Ministry of the Attorney General and St. Leonard’s Community Services. Adult Diversion may be used to deal with persons alleged to have committed an offence, only if the accused cannot be adequately dealt with by way of police warning, caution or referral to the Pre-charge Diversion program. This would be due to the serious nature of the offence, the number of previous offences committed by the person or any other aggravating circumstances.
The Adult Diversion program provides alternatives to the formal court process by providing community based sanctions when a person is alleged to have committed an offence.
Supportive interventions and programming assist adults to accept responsibility for their offence and address the impact of their actions on themselves, their family, the victim and the community.
