First Annual Green Day at the Youth Action Centre BEFORE
AFTER!
The Staff and Students at YAC all pitched in to weed, plant and generally beautify the premises at the Youth Action Centre.
YOUTH HOMELESSNESS WEEK
Youth Homelessness Week was declared January 29 to February 2, 2007 and it was designed to achieve two goals. The first is to ensure that the youth in our community are aware of the services available to them, and the second is to increase the community's awareness of the problem of youth homelessness. St. Leonard's Community Services held planned events for the week. Monday night began with an opening ceremony at the Youth Action Centre (YAC) followed by serving dinner at Boston Pizza, while youth were on an overnight at the Tim Horton's Camp. Tuesday we were at the Java Cafe, where presentations were made by the Out of the Cold group and the Why Not City Missions. Wednesday, Laurier Brantford students held a recreation night at the university gymnasium. Thursday was the "Five Gallon Challenge" where the staff, youth and the community are welcome to taste the best soups in Brantford. Our Groundhog Day Sleepout followed the Five Gallon Challenge to raise awareness of the many community youth who sleep out in the cold. To finish the week, on Friday there was the Groundhog Day BBQ lunch at the Youth Resource Centre (YRC). The winners of the Youth Homelessness Week draw were as follows: 1st Prize – Joyce Morgan - $1000.00 2nd Prize – Dave Rigglesford - $500.00 3rd Prize – Tony Clarke - $250.00 4th Prize – Wayne Barnett - $50.00 5th Prize – Pat Atkinson - $50.00 6th Prize – Bruce Barrett/Steve Schroeder - $50.00 7th Prize – Jamie Kozak - $50.00 8th Prize – Aad Vermeyden - $50.00
