POLICY

St. Leonard's Community Services is committed to the protection of its staff and property from accidental injury.  See Appendix 12 Health and Safety Policy Statement.

St. Leonard's will develop and maintain a safe and healthy workplace in compliance with legislative requirements and will strive to eliminate any foreseeable hazards which may result in personal injury and illness, fires and damage to property.  Prevention is the direct responsibility of Management, Supervisors and staff alike.  See Appendix 34 Multi-Workplace Joint Health and Safety Committee Terms of Reference.

PROCEDURE

All staff will perform his/her jobs properly in accordance with the established procedures and operating philosophy of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

AGENCY RESPONSIBILITY

The Agency will endeavour to maintain a safe workplace by the following:

  1. To establish a team of management and frontline representatives to address issues of Health, Safety and Security relevant to the Agency.
  2. To provide appropriate training for all staff and to offer a variety of qualified safety programs.
  3. To provide Agency safety procedures and abide by all occupational health and safety regulations as required by law.
  4. To provide proper safeguards in order to eliminate and/or control any physical hazards that may exist.
  5. To ensure that First Aid and access to medical attention are available to staff.
  6. To ensure safety inspections, reporting, fire drills and any other duties deemed necessary are conducted at all facilities as required.

STAFF RESPONSIBILITY - GENERAL SAFETY RULES

    1. Whenever involved in an accident, regardless of how minor, report it immediately. 
    2. Get first aid promptly.
    3. Follow instructions, don't take chances.  If unsure, ask for information.
    4. Report immediately any condition or practice which could cause injury to individuals or damage to equipment.
    5. Put everything in its proper place.  Disorder causes injury and wastes time, energy and material.  Keep work area clean and orderly.
    6. Use the right tools and equipment for the job and use them safely.
    7. Use, adjust, alter and repair equipment only when authorized.
    8. Wear approved personal protective equipment as directed.  Keep it in good condition.
    9. Don't horseplay; avoid distracting others.
    10. Adhere to all safety rules and regulations.

    IN THE EVENT OF INJURY

    A Staff Injury/Occupational Illness Report must be completed whenever a work-related injury or disease occurs.

    The Staff Injury/Occupational Illness Report must be forwarded to the HR Administrator within twenty-four hours of the injury or onset of disease.  The Human Resources Administrator will then complete the Employer’s Report of Injury/Disease (WSIB Form 7) if necessary and forward it to the appropriate WSIB office. 

    When a staff who has been absent from work as a result of the injury/disease returns to work, the Human Resources Administrator must be advised immediately by the Service Director or his delegate so that the WSIB can be notified.
