6-70 HIRING (NEPOTISM)
Approved April 2010

POLICY

A member of a staff’s immediate family will be considered for employment or volunteering or student placement by the Agency provided the applicant possesses all of the qualifications for employment.

PROCEDURE

An immediate family member may not be hired, if such employment will:

  1. create a supervisor/subordinate relationship with an immediate family member;
  2. result in immediate family members being employed or volunteering within the same department of the Agency; or
  3. create either an actual conflict of interest or the appearance of a conflict of interest.

These criteria will also be considered when assigning, transferring, or promoting staff.  Staff who marry/co-habit or become members of the same household may continue employment despite this policy.

As defined in the Employment Standards Act, 2000, the "immediate family" includes grandparents, parents, foster parents, bothers, sisters, spouse, common-law spouse, children, inlaws, step-parents, step-children, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Situations which existed prior to the enactment of this policy and which violate the restriction contained in this policy will be permitted to continue despite the enactment of this policy.
