6-190 MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS

POLICY
It is a condition of employment that all new staff, students, and volunteers obtain a medical examination.
PROCEDURE
Staff and volunteers/students will be reimbursed for any fees associated with the medical exam, if applicable, upon presentation of the receipt.
Staff and volunteers/students will attend for further medical examinations at the request of the Agency, from time to time, in order to determine his/her continued ability to perform job duties and comply with Governmental requirements.
All staffs and volunteers and/or students are required to promptly report any illness, which may affect his/her duties or the safety of his/her co-workers or clients.
If it is determined that a staff and/or volunteer/student has a contagious or communicable disease, he/she will be required to follow physician’s instructions, during which time he/she may be restricted in his/her duties if necessary.
St. Leonard’s Community Services will ensure that all new staff, students and volunteers have a medical examination prior to their start date.
- Prior to the start date of employment, all new staff, students and volunteers are required to have a current medical certificate (Appendix 4), signed by a medical practitioner.
- All staff, students and volunteers hired after the approval date of this policy who are working in direct client service positions must provide a medical certificate and proof (i.e., copy of immunization card) that they have received a booster (TD-Tetanus and Diphtheria) within the last ten (10) years, as well as immunization for Measles and Rubella (German measles).
- A staff, student or volunteer may request for medical, religious or personal reasons not to be immunized as listed above. The staff must provide, to the Agency, a written objection for an exemption to be granted. For medical exemptions, the written objection must be signed by his/her physician. Staff receiving an exemption must provide a medical certificate prior to his/her start date.
To protect the confidentiality of staff, access to the medical certificate will be limited to the Human Resources Administrator, Finance Director and Executive Director.
If there are concerns about a staff’s fitness for his/her job, additional medical information and a physician’s report may be required. St. Leonard’s Community Services will make reasonable accommodation for disabilities as required by the Human Rights Code.
All staff, students and volunteers will be provided with a list of an additional 5 immunizations suggested by the local Medical Officer of Health for staff, students and volunteers working in direct client service positions. Staff, students and volunteers will be required to review and sign the Immunization Waiver - Appendix 5 stating they have read and understand the suggested immunizations and the risks associated with opting not to receive the immunizations suggested by the Medical Officer of Health.
