6-480 SICK LEAVE

POLICY
All permanent full time staff will be entitled to accumulate one half day of sick leave per month of service or six days per fiscal year based on an 8 hour workday in provision for prolonged illness. There will be no financial conversion for unused sick time.
All temporary staff fulfilling a full time contract of longer than 3 months will be entitled to accumulate one half day of sick leave per month of service or six days per fiscal year based on an 8 hour workday in provision for prolonged illness.
PROCEDURE
Vacation days will accrue while on unpaid sick leave until a staff becomes eligible for long term disability.
Staff absent due to illness will be paid his/her salary until his/her six days for the current fiscal year plus his/her accumulated sick days from prior years are exhausted, at which point sick benefits pursuant to the Employment Insurance Act, 2000 will take effect. After 120 continuous calendar days of illness, the staff will become eligible for long-term disability benefits subject to the terms and conditions of the Agency Group Insurance Policy.
Staff who are ill and are unable to work his/her shift because of illness are required to notify his/her Supervisor as early as possible of his/her inability to work.
A medical certificate may be required after three (3) consecutive working days of absence.
The Agency reserves the right to have a staff examined by a doctor of its choice in order to obtain a second opinion with respect to the staff's inability to work. The Agency will be responsible for the cost of such an examination.
Staff absent from work on WSIB as a result of an injury and who return within 2 years after the injury has occurred will be entitled upon return to work to the same amount of sick leave they will have been entitled to if he or she had worked during the period of absence.
