6-530 UNPAID EMERGENCY LEAVE
Approved September 2007
POLICY
In addition to the paid sick and compassionate leave, staff are entitled to up to 10 days of unpaid time off work every calendar year because of illness, injury, or certain emergencies. Reasons for an unpaid emergency leave include:
- Personal illness, injury or medical emergency,
- Death, illness, injury, medical emergency or other urgent matter relating to:
- Spouse or same sex partner,
- Parent, step parent, foster parent, child, stepchild, foster child, grandparent, step grandparent, grandchild, or step grandchild of the staff, the staff’s spouse or same sex partner,
- Spouse or same sex partner of a staff’s child,
- Brother or sister of the staff,
- Relative of the staff who is dependent on the staff for care or assistance.
PROCEDURE
Emergency leaves will be granted in accordance with the Employment Standards Act, 2000. Staff are required to provide written notice that they will be taking an emergency leave of absence. If there is no time to give notice before the leave, then the written notice must be submitted as soon as possible.
Vacation and sick leave days will continue to accrue and the Agency will provide all eligible benefits while on approved emergency leave.
The Agency Pension Plan is a contributory plan, whereby the contribution by the staff is matched by the Agency. Should a staff wish to continue receiving the Agency’s full contribution to the Registered Pension Plan, the staff must make arrangements to continue paying his/her contributions for the duration of the leave.
Prior to the leave, staff are required to indicate whether they will continue to make contributions during his/her leave, or cease contributions until the end of the leave (see Appendix 22).
