Through funding from the National Crime Prevention Strategy – Crime Prevention Fund, Youth and Art is an afterschool arts program for high-risk youth. The program has a theatre arts focus. Youth will be exposed to theatre activities such as improvisation, dance, set and costume design, lighting, etc. Youth will also be provided with an opportunity to showcase their talents in regularly scheduled public performances i.e. theatre or school venues.
The goal of the Youth and Art program is to reduce and/or prevent youth involvement in criminal activity.
The planned outcomes are to:
- increase capacity of high-risk youth to avoid risky behaviours
- reduce negative peer relationships
- increase academic success
The program will provide 12 sessions of training to three separate streams of youth: aged 9 to 12, 13 to 15 and 16 to 18.
Youth participating in the program will receive a $60.00 honorarium upon completion of the program.
A community advisory committee will monitor and oversee the program.
