Donations

Since 1968, St. Leonard’s Community Services has operated as an Agency for change. Our mission is to empower children, families, and adults to overcome life challenges by helping them make responsible choices that result in positive change.

We thank you for your generous donation and support to help youth and families cope with challenges ranging from physical and sexual abuse, mental health and addiction issues, to gambling problems and unemployment.

Whether you donate money, clothing or your time, your gift impacts the lives of so many people in the Brantford community. Your gift can be an introduction to St. Leonard’s Community Services and supports that offer help while creating hope.

Six Ways to Make a Donation

1. First Time Donor’s Super Tax Credit

The Federal Government’s Budget 2013 established a First-Time Donor’s Super Tax Credit to encourage charitable donations from first-time donor or those who have not claimed a charitable donation on their taxes in the last five years. It is a great opportunity for anyone making their first charitable gift.

Charitable donations are eligible for tax credits. That means you get a certain portion of your donation back on your tax return. The standard federal tax credit for a donation is 15% for the first $200.00 donated and 29% for donations above that level. The Super Credit increases these federal tax credits by 25% for those who have not donated recently.

If neither you nor your spouse has claimed a donation tax credit in any year for the five preceding years, this CRA ruling indicates that you may now be eligible for tax credits as follows:

  • Donations up to and including $200.00; 40% tax credit
  • Donations between $201.00 and $1,000.00; 54% tax credit

4. Gifts of Stock or Securities

Another way to give is by making a Gift of securities or Stock. The Government has recently made it very attractive for you to donate shares to charitable organization such as St. Leonard’s Community Services. When you donate publicly traded shares directly to the Agency you pay no tax on the capital gains and receive a tax credit for the full market value of the gift.

5. Corporate Matching Gifts

An increasing number of employers now offer staff members a charitable matching gift program as a benefit. With this type of plan, when you donate to a charitable organization of your choice, your employer will make a matching contribution to the same organization. It is a wonderful way to make your gift work even harder and increase substantially. Ask your Human Resources Department if your employer has a Corporate Matching Gift Program.

6. Bequest in a Will

An increasing number of people are making lasting gifts to charitable organization through a dedicated donation bequest within their estate planning. This generous life donation can be a specific bequest (i.e. $10,000 for the charitable organization), a trust for a term of years (life interest to a spouse with the remainder to the charitable organization), a residual bequest (after the specific bequests, the remainder of the assets is the subject of residual bequests), or a charitable remainder trust (a trust for a term of years where the residuary beneficiaries are charitable organizations).
